Cookie Policy

1. What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your computer, phone, or other device when you visit it. They are widely used to make websites work properly, to remember your preferences, and to give website operators information about how people are using their site.
Cookies are not programs and cannot execute code. They cannot contain viruses or install malware on your device. A cookie is simply a small piece of data stored by your browser that a website can read the next time you visit.
Similar technologies — such as local storage, session storage, and pixel tags — function like cookies and are covered by this policy. FairFirm does not currently use tracking pixels or device fingerprinting.
2. Cookies We Use
(a) Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are required for the platform to function. Without them, you cannot log in or stay logged in. They cannot be disabled without breaking authentication. Canadian law does not require consent for strictly necessary cookies.
| Cookie Name | Purpose | Type |
|---|---|---|
| sb-*-auth-token | Supabase authentication session — keeps you logged in across page loads and browser sessions | Strictly necessary |
| CSRF token | Cross-site request forgery protection — prevents unauthorized actions being performed on your behalf | Strictly necessary |
(b) Functional Cookies
These cookies remember your preferences to improve your experience. They are not strictly required for the platform to function but improve usability.
| Cookie / Storage Key | Purpose | Type |
|---|---|---|
| ff-jurisdiction-pref | Remembers your jurisdiction preference for FairDraft document generation so you don't have to re-select it each session | Functional |
| ff-theme | Remembers your display mode preference (light/dark, if implemented) | Functional |
(c) Analytics Cookies
Currently: None.FairFirm does not currently use any analytics cookies or analytics tracking tools. If FairFirm adds an analytics tool (such as PostHog or an equivalent privacy-respecting service) in the future, this policy will be updated with at least 30 days' notice to registered users before any analytics cookies are deployed.
(d) Marketing and Advertising Cookies
None. FairFirm does not run paid advertising and does not use tracking pixels, retargeting cookies, or any third-party advertising cookies. FairFirm does not share your data with advertising networks.
3. Third-Party Cookies
FairFirm uses the following third-party services that may set their own cookies:
Stripe (payment processing)
When you proceed to a checkout or payment page, Stripe sets cookies necessary to process your payment securely. These cookies are set and governed by Stripe's own privacy and cookie policies. FairFirm does not control these cookies. They are used solely for the purpose of secure payment processing and fraud prevention.
Google (OAuth sign-in)
If you choose to sign in using your Google account, Google will set cookies associated with Google's OAuth authentication process. These cookies are set and governed by Google's privacy policies. You can avoid these cookies by signing in with email and password instead.
FairFirm does not embed content from other third-party services (social media widgets, embedded videos, advertising networks, etc.) that would set additional cookies.
4. Cookie Duration
| Cookie Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| Session cookies | Expire when you close your browser |
| Authentication persistence cookie (sb-*-auth-token) | 7 days, or until you log out — whichever comes first |
| Preference cookies (jurisdiction, theme) | 1 year from last update |
5. How to Control Cookies
Browser settings: You can control and delete cookies through your browser settings. All major browsers allow you to refuse new cookies, delete existing cookies, and set preferences for specific websites. For instructions specific to your browser, visit aboutcookies.org.
Impact of disabling cookies: If you disable strictly necessary cookies (the Supabase authentication cookies), you will not be able to log in to FairFirm or use any features that require authentication. The platform will not function correctly without these cookies. Disabling functional cookies (such as the jurisdiction preference cookie) will not prevent you from using the platform — you will simply need to re-select your preferences each session.
Cookie consent banner: FairFirm does not display a cookie consent banner for strictly necessary cookies, because Canadian law (PIPEDA and Alberta PIPA) does not require consent for cookies that are strictly necessary for a service the user has requested. A consent banner will be added before any non-essential analytics cookies are deployed.
Do Not Track: FairFirm respects Do Not Track (DNT) browser signals. Since FairFirm does not currently use analytics or advertising cookies, enabling DNT has no effect on your experience — we are not tracking you beyond what is strictly necessary for authentication and session management.
6. Changes to This Policy
FairFirm may update this Cookie Policy at any time. For material changes — particularly if new categories of cookies (such as analytics) are introduced — FairFirm will provide at least 30 days' written notice to registered users via email before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the platform after the notice period constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
